Inspired by Cristobal Balenciaga’s original salon in Paris and designed to evoke a sense of permanence, Balenciaga’s New York City flagship celebrates designer Alexander Wang’s vision for the house. The SoHo location, comprising of an adjacent men’s and women’s flagship, is clad in deep green Verde Ramegiatto marble on the staircase, walls, and combined with limestone tiles for a patterned flooring. Other materials used include suede, “cracked resin,” polished chrome, poured concrete and “caviar” wool upholstery. The women’s boutique is meant to feel intimate, with the space narrowing towards the back and topped by a curving lattice-pattern skylight that connects the triple height ceiling to the basement. KPA worked in tandem with Balenciaga’s design team to further develop the design concept into construction documents (and into reality).
